The pacs.028 ISO 20022 message stands for Financial Institution To Financial Institution Payment Status Request.
pacs.028 ISO 20022 message: Scope
The pacs.028 message is used in interbank payments as a transaction in XML format between financial institutions to reqeust the status of a previously sent payment instruction or request (e.g. pacs.008 ISO 20022 message or camt.056 ISO 20022 message).
pacs.028 ISO 20022 message: Usage
General information
The pacs.028 is the XML message format that banks and clearing systems use to query each other about the status of payments or related transactions. Depending on the procedure, a status response is sent for individual transactions or a status response for a larger number of transactions. Although it is a PACS message type, the pacs.028 message has no booking relevance and is only informative.
SEPA SCT
SCT FIToFIPaymentStatusRequest – pacs.028.001.03
The pacs.028 message is used in the Bundesbank’s SEPA-Clearer to inquire about the status of previous transaction to the SEPA-Clearer. Previous transactions can be a
- recall (camt.056 ISO 20022 message),
- a request about the whereabouts of a payment/pacs.008 ISO 20022 message (Claim of Non-Receipt with camt.027 ISO 20022 message) or
- a request to correct the value date (Claim for Value Date Correction with camt.087 ISO 20022 message).
SEPA SDD
The pacs.028 message is currently not used in SEPA SDD.
SEPA SCT Inst

In SEPA SCT Inst, the debtor bank uses a pacs.028 to query the status of either a single SEPA Instant Payment transfer or of several SEPA Instant Payment transfers (pacs.008 ISO 20022 messages) from the TIPS/RT1 clearing system. The status request is answered with a pacs.002 ISO 20022 message.
The pacs.028 can also be used to request the status of recalls (camt.056 ISO 20022 messages) from the bank that previously initiated the recalls of one or more SEPA Instant Credit Transfers. In this case, the creditor bank responds to a pacs.028 message with a pacs.004 ISO 20022 message or a camt.029 ISO 20022 message.
